I was lucky enough to have Alex as my midwife throughout my pregnancy and after; Alex is calm, relaxed and thorough in her practise and suited my personality and wishes. At 40+2 days at 2am I was so excited - I grabbed my head phones and put on Ed Sheeran mostly awake with excitement that potentially this was it- contractions! The contractions remained mild and 10-15 minutes apart all day, my husband went to work and came home at about 3pm the contractions still remained but I was ok and still excited. At about 6pm is when I put the TENS machine on and started working a bit harder. The night consisted of showers, tens machine, birth ball over the bed and some very very brief lie downs in bed and a couple of phone calls to Alex for reassurance that everything was ok. 6am came around and the sun was coming up I wanted to stay at home for as long as possible and by now I needed the extra support. We headed in to the hospital at about 7am. Greeted by the amazing Alex with a warm embrace and friendly smile I felt instantly relieved (and so did my husband!) At about 730am I had an examination and I was 4cm. We went up to the birth suite and in to the bath (which was the best thing) only 3 hours later and I was overwhelmed with urge to push, my waters broke somewhere around now and I was excited that I could feel that the baby wasn’t far away, with another hour of pushing we transferred out of the bath to a differant position to aid things along a bit. The pushing was overwhelmingly hard and I had had enough on the verge of giving up however Alex, my husband and Bridget (another midwife and friend) had all the faith in me when I certainly felt I couldn’t go on, their motivation and support in those final moments allowed me to muster up the last bit of physical and mental strength to achieve what I had hoped for approximately 2.5 hours of pushing and at 12:43 at 40+3 weeks she arrived safe in to my arms.
The after care I received from Alex was again thorough and supportive, nothing was ever rushed or a hassle . Alex visited at home until I had the confidence that Tilly was thriving and my recovery was going smoothly.
Big thank you to Alex for being a huge help with my biggest achievement to date- creating and birthing our Matilda ❤️
