During my pregnancy I was fearless about giving birth. This confidence came from the understanding that when the time came, my body would know exactly what to do. So when the time had finally come, I was so ready, I had never been so ready for anything in my life. It was a Friday afternoon and I was 40+4 weeks pregnant. To speed things along I asked my midwife for a stretch and sweep. By 9pm that night I started to go into early labour. At the start my contractions were mild and bearable. By around 4.30am my contractions were much more painful and closer together. I wanted to be at home for as long as possible, so I waited it out for another few hours at home. At around 7.30am my husband, my mum and I left for the hospital. When we arrived my contractions were so strong and becoming unbearable. Upon arrival I was put in a temporary room to see how dilated and far along I was. All I wanted was to get into the bath as I had planned a water birth. When my midwife Amber arrived she was calm and confident and gave me a familiar voice to follow. At this moment I felt like I could relax. Then my waters broke and we headed up to my birthing room. I hopped into the bath whilst it was filling. I can’t explain the way the water made me feel. It had taken almost all of my pain away. I went into a meditative like state. I was in my own world. I got a feeling of excitement knowing my son would be here soon. I was so excited to push. It all went so fast when I started pushing. Once his head was out I gave one last big push and he was here. My husband caught him and pulled him out of the water. He was so beautiful. That moment is a moment only a mum can understand. So many emotions at one time. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. I had an amazing birth. My body did an amazing job and I am still in awe of how perfect everything went. My body recovered so well and I am now 10 months postpartum. My body and mind are both mentally and physically stronger than ever before, and I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in. I strongly believe having one midwife throughout my pregnancy helped me with how well my pregnancy and birth went, and I can’t wait to do it all over again!
